(11/2023) "The 2021 Langhe Freisa Kye is redolent of black cherry, herbs, licorice and spice. The Vajra children are picking this fruit 15-20 days earlier than their parents did, a sign of the new generation taking on a more prominent role at the winery. These transitions take time. The old Kye, the wine made my parents Aldo and Milena Vajra, was one the most distinctive wines in Piedmont. This version is good, but not anywhere as distinctive. I am reminded of the old adage: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' Drinking Window: 2024 - 2033."
(12/6/2023) "Freisa was once a key variety in the production of red Vermouth, but demand slumped following US prohibition and changes in taste. Similar in characteristics to Nebbiolo, Freisa typically has more rustic tannins and high amounts of malic acid. This example from GD Vajra offers fragrant raspberry and cherry notes with some dark, earthy, plummy hints. In the mouth, a core of succulent dark hedgerow fruits overlay a background of dark chocolate and spicy wood, with floral overtones. It's a vertical wine that's sapid and fresh, with focus and vibrancy from the acidity, and grippy tannins which cling on though the long finish. Drinking Window: 2024 - 2033."
(4/4/2024) "The G.D. Vajra 2021 Langhe Freisa Kye has a delicate bouquet with intertwined berry and floral elements that could recall Japanese cherry blossom or even a Sicilian almond blossom. Beyond that, the wine offers an interlude of fresh blue fruits with elderberry and juniper. It shows terrific freshness and more tart flavors to close. Drink Date: 2024 - 2028."
